Sammy Wins UK Indoor Championships

Sammy has won the UK indoor heptathlon title in Glasgow with a personal best 5,849 points performance leaving him as the leading British athlete for the season and 7th on the UK all-time list to match his outdoor all-time ranking position.

A relatively minor intercostal muscle injury had prevented Sammy from competing and completing much of his technical training since the first week of January. This led Sammy to miss the England Athletics indoor heptathlon, the Tallinn World Tour event and the individual UK Championships.

The UK indoor heptathlon was hosted by Scottish Athletics at the fantastic Emirates Arena in Glasgow. Sammy started the competition with a positive 7.08 seconds, a tenth off his personal best. Having clearly lost more that a tenth with a poor reaction and start, it’s clear that the basic speed is there as he crept his way through the field. In the long jump Sammy produced a 7.23m second jump which although short of his 7.57m personal best still represented an indoor best ever performance. Sammy waited until the final round in the shot put to produce a 14.83m put which is his best throw since July 2024 and put him into a leading position in the competition which he kept til the end. Day one was completed with a solid 1.97m leap in the high jump. Of all the events affected by Sammy’s rib issues since January it was the high jump technical training most impacted. The result was therefore encouraging.

Day two started with a 8.39 sec 60m hurdles followed by a 4.61m pole vault which again was encouraging as it was off a shortened run up and he was well clear at the 4.61m height though was unable to clear the following height. Sammy finished the meeting with a personal best 2:38.34 secs in the 1,000m where he led the race from the start.

Sammy is especially pleased with his result and there is much to do in the run up to the Commonwealth Games selection in June. As well as a number of individual competitions and warm weather training in the run-up to that selection, Sammy is also planning his first decathlon of the season at the end of May.
